In the ’80s, Bernie and I dedicated most of our time to building his business and my academic career. We made no trips abroad.
SAN DIEGO, 1981
We had made our first trip to California in 1971, driving the coastal highway from L.A. north. Ten years later, it was time to see more.
▼ ▶ We went in April, when Chicagoland was still in winter mode. At San Diego waited for a cab, holding the coats we’d needed that morning but didn’t need now.
Bernie turned to me and asked: “How much do you think we could get for the townhouse?” He was kidding, of course. But still, it was tempting.
We had no agenda for that trip except to relax, explore, eat, and break from our routine. I’m happy to say, we succeeded in every one of those goals.
