1992: PHOTOS, SCENES, AND STORIES FROM GERMANY
For three years in the early 1950s, I lived in Heidelberg, Germany with my parents. I didn’t return to that country until 1992, when Bernie and I flew Luftansa German Airlines to Europe. We got off to explore Munich and adjust to the time change in stages before heading on for three fine weeks in Greece.
The photos and stories below capture the essence of our two-day stay in Munich.

Munich
▼ Soon after our arrival, Bernie seized on the first real German treat that he discovered: a lovely handmade pretzel. We took advantage of this rare chance to practice the German that we’d learned (each in our own way) in the 1960s.
▼ We walked all over the picturesque parts of Munich. Despite the gray and drizzly weather, we found flowers in a park to be good photo brighteners.
▼ Bernie watches a footrace through Marienplatz Square in the heart of Munich, near Rathaus-Glockenspiel, a mechanical clock with life-sized figures that come out to “perform” on the hour.
▼▼▼ We didn’t have much time to do more than basic sightseeing, but for sure we enjoyed sampling local pastries, taking in the local color, and window shopping in the market area.
