PHOTOS FROM THE YEARS AFTER BERNIE AND MARTHA MET IN 1965

Bernie outside Mt. Pilatus Lodge in Switzerland, 1967, on his first trip abroad. Per the mores of the time, Martha couldn’t go with him, because they weren’t married yet. Before he left, she spent two months teaching him conversational German to help him enjoy it more.

Bernie in Lucerne, Switzerland, on that same trip.

Around 1990, Bernie’s Uncle Irv Marks savors a cold one on Bernie and Martha’s screened porch in Riverwoods, Illinois.

In 1975, the family came together for Murray and Pat’s wedding. Left to right: Murray, Minnie, Pat, Rozanne, Martha, and Bernie.

In 1979, the family gathered again for Rozanne and Marty’s wedding. Back row: Murray, Pat, Marty, and Bernie. Front row: Martha, Minnie, and Rozanne.

On Thanksgiving Day 1972, Rozanne, Murray and Minnie Marks crowd onto the sofa with Martha’s mother Margaret Alford (in the red dress), in Bernie and Martha’s tiny apartment in Northbrook, Illinois.

That same day, they all shared the first Thanksgiving dinner that Martha ever made… the first of dozens to come.

In 1979, Bernie dines with his mother Minnie at his sister’s wedding in Chicago.

At the same event, mother and son dance together.

Bernie, Martha, and José Gato, who was their “child” for twenty years.
